Submission for a competition held by the city of Reykjavík for the design of a new Kindergarten in the heart of the city.
We placed emphasis on a carefully designed outdoor area by making good use of the existing plot and roof gardens for a diverse age group.
The majority of the plot is protected. The playground was refurbished and designed to maximize playfulness and exploration. Seating areas were added so that teaching could take place outdoors. All the homerooms were situated in a manner such that they could be opened to the playground.
The building reaches a maximum of three floors on the side facing Snorrabraut, Reykjavík. We decided to use the maximum number of floors according to zoning law in order to reduce the size of the building footprint but also to allow the family center to operate independently of the kindergarten from the third floor.
